8 Tips for Boosting Your Immune System

Now, more than ever, a good immune system is very important. We are constantly being exposed to new strains of viruses, bacteria and the like. While we can’t change the strength of an infection, if we get one, we can change the strength of our immune system to help fight it off. Here are some things you can do today to boost your immunes system.

  1. Practice good hygiene. Hand washing is key to stopping the spread of bacteria and viruses. The CDC recommends scrubbing your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Other good hygiene practices, although less obvious for some, include replacing your toothbrush, washing your sheets and pillowcases regularly and sanitizing your phone.
  2. Stay hydrated. It is important to stay hydrates, particularly during cold and flu season. You should drink no less that 1/2 your body weight in ounces of clean water per day. If you are a soda or coffee drinker, you need even more water.
  3. Eliminate sugar. Sugar is one of the most inflammatory and immune-suppressing foods there is. While it can be challenging, you should try to avoid sugar in all of its processed forms, as much as possible. There are many lists available for all of the names of hidden sugar. It’s constantly changing as manufacturers come up with new names for processed sugar. Look for names like dextrose, corn sweetener and generic natural sweetener, for sure. A quick Google search on “names for sugar” should yield a lot of results.
  4. Eat more onions and garlic. Yes, you read that right. Onions and garlic are naturally anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral. The same also goes for members of the Allium sativum family, which includes leeks, scallions, chives and shallots. Increasing your intake of these vegetables can help you fight infection and strengthen your respiratory system.
  5. Take immune supportive supplements. During active infection, your body needs extra support. Immune supportive supplements, such as vitamin C, vitamin D, echinacea, elderberry, colloidal silver and many others, can help prevent and fight infection.
  6. Move your body. Your body’s lymph system is central to your immune system. One of the best ways to stimulate the lymph system is to move your body. Activities that involve jumping, like jumping jacks or jumping on a trampoline, are particularly helpful. However, any movement that gets your heart rate up is beneficial.
  7. Get adequate sleep. There is a reason why you sleep more when you are sick. During sleep, your body repairs and regenerates tissues. Rather than spending your energy on waking activities, use your energy towards fighting the infection by taking time to rest instead. If you find that you struggle getting a full night’s sleep on a regular basis, you may have underlying issues that need to be addressed. I’d be happy to help you with that.
  8. Reduce stress. Stress can negatively impact your immune system and make it harder to fight infection. It is very important to do everything you can to eliminate unnecessary stress. Enjoy stress-reducing activities like reading a book, meditating, playing a game with your family, or just doing nothing at all. Give yourself permission to relax. You do not always have to be doing something.
